A Review of Current Therapeutic Practice for the Management of Chronic Pain

INTRODUCTION Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than three to six months, or pain that persists beyond the expected time frame of healing for an injury1. This review looks at current practice in chronic pain management. The model of “pain as a disease entity” proposed by Siddall and Cousins2 is reviewed along with the interdisciplinary approach to chronic pain management. Lastly the specific modalities of intervention are examined and future directions for research in this field identified.
